Welcome to Grade 7 and 8 Humanities

Hello,

My name is Avery Ruuska and I am very pleased to teach your child this year. I teach Grade 7 Humanities to 7- and 7-. I also teach Grade 8 Humanities to 8-

Homework:
I recommend reading for 20-30 minutes per evening. Daily reading is critical to increasing comprehension, speed and the understanding of how our language is constructed.

Homework is periodically sent home with your child to complete.  This work consists of items that were not finished in class.  This homework will always be checked so that students will develop positive habits of meeting deadlines and being accountable for their work.

All deadlines are posted on the board and blog as reminders.

Humanities Curriculum:
In Humanities English Language Arts is combined with the Social Studies curriculum to provide a rich understanding of topics and skills.

The aim of English Language Arts is to enable each student to understand and appreciate the English language while reading, writing and speaking confidently and competently. Books for daily reading in class are available in the school library and public library. Students may also choose to bring a book of choice from home. Students are encouraged to read a variety of types of books and vary their choices in order to gain comprehension skills over a wide selection of written text such as, fiction and non-fiction to challenge their reading abilities.

In Social Studies 7, students will explore the origins, histories and movements of people who have forged the foundation of Canadian Confederation. Students will examine how political, economic, social and demographic changes have shaped Canadian history and Canada today.

In Social Studies 8, students will examine the topic of worldview, and how individual worldview is shaped through personal experience. Students will explore the Renaissance, as well as, Aztec and Japanese culture pre and post European contact.

I am looking forward to our time together,
